OpenDesktop Moodle Module

The OpenDesktop Module integrates a virtual online-desktop into Moodle. The module makes it possible to access your personal online-desktop directly inside Moodle. In a Moodle course you can start and share your own online-desktop with other course members, who can ineract or just watch. So this is perfect for synchronous online-cooperation or a web-conference.

The OpenDesktop Module integrates the Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop into Moodle. Both the Moodle Module and the Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop are OpenSource (GPLv2).

OpenDesktop as an Alternative to Web Conferencing Services

What advantages does OpenDesktop have over traditional web conferencing technologies?

  • In traditional web conferencing, video and audio require a lot of bandwidth; if one’s own desktop screen is transmitted as well, it is common for audio/video channels to lag or even breakdown. OpenDesktop, however, does not interfere with bandwidth because the screen is transmitted from the server and not from one’s own computer.

  • Starting a program, running animations or running multiple programs frequently requires increased resources on the computer that is showing the presentation. This can compromise the audio and video transmission. With OpenDesktop, these operations are executed on the server only and do not affect video conferencing.

  • OpenDesktop is transmitted almost in real time; therefore, all users see changes at the same time. This means that if someone comments, what she/he refers to will be seen right away by all logged in OpenDesktop users. In traditional web conferencing, audio and video transfers are often not in sync.

  • Files do not have to be transported with USB flash drives, but instead can be accessed and edited online from every computer. Even if one uses a computer that doesn’t have an office package installed, a file can still be edited and sent through OpenDesktop.

  • OpenDesktop is easy to use. By default, trainers will start their own OpenDesktop and the participants will watch. It is also possible to allow the participants to control the trainer’s OpenDesktop and to edit documents online or to do exercises together with the trainer. That is realtime desktop-sharing.
